You try to replicate it, dragging the speed slider on your clip down to 50%, but instead of cinematic gloss, you get a choppy, stuttering mess. It feels amateur, and it’s frustrating. As of July 12, 2025, that frustration ends. This isn’t just about slowing down a clip; it’s about fundamentally changing how you capture time itself. By the end of this guide, you will master the professional workflow for shooting and editing buttery-smooth slow motion that adds immense emotional weight and production value to your videos, using the gear you already have.


Why Most Slow-Motion Attempts Fail (The Frame Rate Problem)

Before we touch a single setting, we need to understand the ‘magic trick’ behind slow motion. Think of a video as a digital flipbook. The number of ‘pages’ shown every second is the frame rate, measured in frames per second (fps).

  • 24fps: The standard for movies. Our eyes are accustomed to this rate, and it provides a subtle, pleasing motion blur that we associate with ‘cinematic’ footage.
  • 30fps: Common for broadcast TV and many online videos. It’s slightly smoother than 24fps.
  • 60fps / 120fps / 240fps: These are High Frame Rates (HFR). They capture more ‘pages’ in the flipbook every second.

The mistake nearly everyone makes is shooting at 24 or 30fps and then trying to slow it down. Your First Step: Setting Up Your Camera for HFR

The good news is that almost every modern smartphone and mirrorless camera can shoot in HFR. It’s a setting you may have never touched. Let’s find it.

For Smartphone Users (iPhone/Android):

  1. Open your native Camera app and switch to Video mode.
  2. Look in the corner of your screen (usually the top right). You’ll see settings like ‘HD • 30’ or ‘4K • 60’.
  3. Tap on these numbers. This will bring up your resolution and frame rate options.
  4. Select the highest frame rate available. This will likely be ‘4K • 60’ or ‘1080p • 120’. For the smoothest slow motion, 120fps is fantastic. For a balance of quality and slow-motion capability, 60fps is the workhorse.

For Mirrorless/DSLR Camera Users:

  1. Switch your camera’s mode dial to the Movie/Video setting.
  2. Go into your camera’s menu system. Find the ‘Movie Record Quality’ or ‘Video Settings’ menu.
  3. Here, you will find options for Resolution (4K, 1080p) and Frame Rate (24p, 30p, 60p, 120p). Some cameras have a specific ‘S&Q’ (Slow & Quick) or ‘HFR’ mode.
  4. Select a high frame rate like 59.94p (60p) or 119.88p (120p).

Crucial Cinematography Rule: The 180-Degree Shutter: For natural-looking motion blur, your shutter speed should ideally be double your frame rate. So, if you’re shooting at 60fps, set your shutter speed to 1/120s. If you’re at 120fps, set your shutter speed to 1/240s. Most phones do this automatically, but for mirrorless/DSLR users, this is non-negotiable for a professional look. You’ll likely need an ND filter if you’re shooting outside in bright daylight to achieve this without overexposing your image.

The Editing Bay: Conforming HFR Footage in DaVinci Resolve

Okay, you’ve shot your beautiful 60fps or 120fps clip. Now, let’s turn it into cinematic slow motion using the free version of DaVinci Resolve. This process is called ‘conforming’ – we’re telling the software to interpret our high frame rate clip as if it were a standard 24fps clip.

  1. Step 1: Create a Cinematic Timeline.
    Open Resolve and start a new project. Before you import anything, click the gear icon in the bottom-right corner to open Project Settings. Under ‘Master Settings,’ set your ‘Timeline Frame Rate’ to 24. This is your cinematic base. Click Save.
  2. Step 2: Import Your HFR Clips.
    Go to the ‘Media’ tab. Find your high-frame-rate video files on your computer and drag them into the Media Pool. Do NOT change the project frame rate if Resolve prompts you.

Your 60fps clip is now playing at 40% speed (24 / 60 = 0.4). Your 120fps clip is playing at 20% speed (24 / 120 = 0.2). There is no choppiness because the software is using all the real, original frames you captured.

“Does shooting in HFR use more storage space?”

Yes, absolutely. A 60fps file is roughly twice the size of a 30fps file of the same duration and resolution. A 120fps file is four times the size. This is why you should use HFR intentionally. Don’t film your entire 20-minute vlog in 120fps. Only use it for specific shots you know you want to slow down in the edit. This saves you tons of storage space and makes file management much easier.

“Why use DaVinci Resolve? Can I do this in CapCut or Premiere Pro?”

You absolutely can! The process is called ‘Interpret Footage’ in Adobe Premiere Pro and works similarly. In mobile editors like CapCut, you can also achieve great results by adding your 60/120fps clip to the timeline and then using the ‘Speed’ tool to slow it down. Because you provided the high-frame-rate source file, these apps can create smooth slow motion. Advanced Technique: The Art of the Speed Ramp

Now that you’ve mastered the basic conform, let’s learn a technique that separates the pros from the amateurs: speed ramping. This is a dynamic change in speed within a single clip, moving from normal speed to slow-motion and back again. It’s incredibly effective for adding energy and style.

The Speed Ramp Studio: Dynamic Time in Resolve

For this, you will NOT pre-conform your clip. You want to edit the speed directly on the timeline.

  1. Drag your original 60fps clip onto your 24fps timeline. It will play in ‘real-time’ (some frames will be dropped to fit, which is fine for now).
  2. Select the clip on the timeline. Press Ctrl+R (Windows) or Cmd+R (Mac) to bring up the ‘Retime Controls.’ You’ll see a blue line at the bottom of the clip with ‘100%’ on it.
  3. Move your playhead to the point where you want the slow motion to begin. Click the small dropdown arrow on the speed control and select ‘Add Speed Point.’
  4. Move your playhead to where you want the slow motion to end. Add another speed point.
  5. Now you have three sections. Click on the speed percentage in the middle section and drag it down. As you drag, you’ll see the speed change (e.g., to 40%). The clip segment will get longer, and the video within it will now be in slow motion.
  6. The transition between speeds will be abrupt. To smooth it out, right-click your clip and select ‘Retime Curve.’ This opens a graph editor below the clip. You can now manipulate the keyframes and bezier handles to create a smooth, curved transition from 100% speed to 40% and back up again.

  • The Shoot: Set your camera (phone or mirrorless) to its highest frame rate (at least 60fps, 120fps is better). Shoot at least 5 different clips of your subject. Remember the 180-degree shutter rule if using a manual camera!
  • The Edit (Part 1 – The Conform): Take your best clip, bring it into a 24fps DaVinci Resolve timeline, and use the Clip Attributes method to create one perfectly smooth slow-motion shot. Add some moody music.
