By the end of this deep dive, you’ll be able to manipulate time in your videos, turning mundane moments into epic, emotionally resonant scenes.


The Fundamental Flaw: Faking It vs. Filming It

Before we touch a single piece of software, we need a paradigm shift. Most creators’ first mistake is shooting standard video (usually 24 or 30 frames per second) and then trying to stretch it out in post-production. Imagine you have a 1-second video with 30 photos (frames). If you try to make that 1 second last for 4 seconds, the software has to invent 90 new photos out of thin air to fill the gaps. The result? A ‘motion interpolation’ disaster of warping, ghosting, and artifacts.

True cinematic slow motion isn’t created in the edit; it’s captured in-camera. The secret is High Frame Rate (HFR) recording. By shooting at 60, 120, or even 240 frames per second (fps), you are capturing more visual information. When you then play that HFR footage back on a standard 24fps timeline, you have an abundance of real frames to display, creating that silky-smooth, crystal-clear slow motion that looks and feels expensive.

Slow motion is the ultimate tool for controlling a story’s emotional and narrative pacing.

Step 1: Set Your Camera for Success

This is the most critical step, and it happens before you even think about editing. You need to tell your camera to capture more frames than usual. Whether you’re using a DSLR, a mirrorless camera, or your smartphone, the principle is the same.

On a Smartphone (iPhone/Android):

  1. Open your main Camera App and switch to Video mode.
  2. Look for the settings, often in the top corner of the screen. You’ll typically see a combination of resolution and frame rate (e.g., ‘4K • 30’).
  3. Tap on this indicator to cycle through the options. You are looking for the highest frame rate available. Prioritize frame rate over resolution for this effect. Shooting in 1080p at 120fps will produce vastly better slow motion than 4K at 30fps.
  4. Select 1080 • 120 or 4K • 60. If your phone has a dedicated ‘Slo-Mo’ mode, that’s even better, as it handles the settings for you.

On a Mirrorless/DSLR Camera:

  1. Dive into your camera’s Menu system.
  2. Navigate to the Video Recording Settings or Movie Settings.
  3. Find the ‘Frame Rate’ or ‘Rec. Quality’ option.
  4. Set your camera to its highest available frame rate, which is often labeled 59.94p (60fps) or 119.88p (120fps).
  5. Crucial Tip: When shooting HFR, you need to adjust your shutter speed. The general rule is to set your shutter speed to double your frame rate. So, for 60fps, use a shutter speed of 1/125s. For 120fps, use 1/250s. This preserves a natural-looking motion blur and avoids a choppy, ‘strobey’ effect.

The Editing Bay: Crafting Slow Motion in DaVinci Resolve

Now for the magic. We have our high-frame-rate footage, and we’re going to use the free version of DaVinci Resolve to conform it into cinematic slow motion. We’ll explore two professional methods: simple conforming for full clips and dynamic speed ramping for stylistic effects.


Method 1: The ‘Conform’ Method (Easiest & Cleanest)

This method converts your entire HFR clip into slow motion before you even put it on the timeline.

  1. Set Up Your Project: Create a new project in Resolve. Go to File -> Project Settings. Under ‘Master Settings’, set your ‘Timeline Frame Rate’ to 24 or 23.976. This is the cinematic standard and is crucial for our math to work.
  2. Import Your HFR Clip: Drag your 120fps footage from your computer into Resolve’s ‘Media Pool’.
  3. Access Clip Attributes: In the Media Pool, right-click on your HFR clip. A menu will pop up. Select ‘Clip Attributes…’.
  4. Perform the Magic: In the ‘Clip Attributes’ window, go to the ‘Video’ tab. You’ll see an option for ‘Video Frame Rate’. It will currently say 120 (or whatever you shot in). Click on it and change it to your timeline’s frame rate (e.g., 24). Click ‘OK’.
  5. Drag to Timeline: Now drag this clip from the Media Pool onto your timeline. That’s it. Your 120fps clip is now playing back perfectly frame-by-frame on a 24fps timeline, resulting in pristine, 20% speed slow motion. No artifacts, no faking, just pure, captured data.

Method 2: The ‘Speed Ramp’ Method (Dynamic & Stylish)

This method is for when you want a clip to go from normal speed, to slow motion, and back to normal speed. It’s a staple of action scenes and high-energy edits.

  1. Start with a Normal Clip: Place your HFR (e.g., 120fps) clip on your 24fps timeline. It will initially play back at normal speed.
  2. Open Retime Controls: Select the clip on the timeline and press Command+R (Mac) or Ctrl+R (Windows). A small menu will appear at the bottom of the clip, showing ‘100%’.
  3. Add Speed Points: Move your playhead to the exact frame where you want the slow motion to begin. In the little menu at the bottom of the clip, click the small downward arrow and select ‘Add Speed Point’.
  4. Now move your playhead to where you want the slow motion to end and add another speed point. You have now isolated a section of your clip between two points.
  5. Change the Speed: Click on the percentage (100%) in the middle section you just created. From the dropdown menu, change the speed. Selecting 50% will slow down 60fps footage perfectly. Selecting 20% will slow down 120fps footage perfectly.
  6. Smooth it Out: Select the clip and press Shift+Command+R (Mac) or Shift+Ctrl+R (Windows). This opens the ‘Retime Curve’ graph in the viewer. You’ll see harsh, blocky steps. By dragging the little bezier handles on your speed points, you can create smooth, curved transitions, making your speed ramp feel organic and seamless, not robotic.

The free version contains everything we discussed here and professional tools for editing, color grading, sound design, and even VFX.
