Stop the Mud: A Step-by-Step Guide to Mixing Kick and Bass That Slams on Any System
Ever craft the perfect, gut-punching kick drum and a groovy, floor-shaking bassline, only to find they turn into an indistinct, muddy mess when you play them together? You’re not alone. This is the single most common mixing problem that separates amateur-sounding tracks from pro-level releases. As of July 11, 2025, that problem ends. The Core Conflict: Why Kick and Bass Fight
Imagine your song’s frequency spectrum is a single lane highway. Both your kick drum and your bass guitar (or 808) are massive semi-trucks trying to drive in that same lane at the same time. The result? A traffic jam. A collision. In audio terms, this is called frequency masking. One sound completely obscures the other, resulting in a loss of definition, punch, and impact. Our entire job today is to act as a traffic controller, giving each element its own dedicated space and time to shine.
We will achieve this professional separation using two fundamental techniques: Surgical EQ and Sidechain Compression. By the end of this guide, you will know exactly how to make your low end hit hard on giant club speakers and remain perfectly clear on tiny iPhone speakers.
Workbench: Forging a Kick & Bass Alliance
For this project, you’ll need a simple drum loop with a four-on-the-floor kick pattern and a bassline. You can use samples or your favorite synth. The goal is to get them playing together so we can operate.
- Step 1: Set Your Levels (Gain Staging)
Before touching any plugins, bring both the kick and bass track faders all the way down. Loop the section where they play together. Slowly bring up the kick fader until it’s peaking around -10dB on its channel meter. Then, bring up the bass fader until it feels balanced with the kick. Aim for your master output to peak around -6dB. This headroom is crucial for the later stages of mixing and mastering. Never start a mix in the red. - Step 2: The Kick’s EQ – Find the Fundamental
Put an EQ plugin on your kick drum track. Any stock parametric EQ (like Ableton’s EQ Eight or FL’s Parametric EQ 2) will work perfectly. Look for one with a spectrum analyzer. - Step 4: The Bass’s EQ – Make a ‘Pocket’
Now, add an EQ plugin to your bass track. Remember the kick’s fundamental frequency we found at 60Hz? We are now going to do the exact opposite on the bass. Create a bell-shaped EQ curve and cut 2-4dB right at 60Hz on the bass track. This is the crucial step. You are literally carving out a sonic ‘pocket’ for the kick drum to sit in perfectly. Listen to the kick and bass together with this EQ change. The separation should be instantly audible. Un-solo the bass and kick. - Step 5: Give the Bass Definition
Your bass might sound a little thin now, so find its own fundamental (it might be higher or lower than the kick’s) and give it a gentle boost. More importantly, we need to make it audible on laptops and phones. The magic here is in the low-mid and mid-range (800Hz – 2kHz). Boost this area slightly to bring out the ‘growl’ or ‘pluck’ of the bass sound. This adds harmonics that small speakers can actually reproduce. - Step 6: The Secret Weapon – Sidechain Compression
EQ has separated our sounds by frequency. Now we’ll separate them by time. Place a Compressor plugin on your bass track (after the EQ). Find the ‘Sidechain’ or ‘Key Input’ section of the compressor. Activate it, and for the input source, select your kick drum track.
Set the following parameters as a starting point:
– Ratio: 4:1
– Attack: As fast as possible (e.g., 1-5 ms)
– Release: Around 50-80 ms (tune this by ear)
Now, lower the Threshold. As you bring it down, you’ll see the compressor’s gain reduction meter jumping every time the kick hits. You should hear the bass volume ‘ducking’ for a split second, making physical space for the kick’s transient to punch through. You only need about 2-4dB of gain reduction. The goal is for it to be felt more than heard. It should sound like the kick and bass are grooving together, not like an obvious pumping effect.

This is almost always a problem with the Release time on your compressor. If the release is too short, the bass volume comes back up jarringly. Your phone cannot reproduce sub-bass frequencies (anything below ~150Hz). The ‘bass’ you hear on small speakers is actually the harmonics in the midrange. The solution is Saturation. Place a saturation or distortion plugin on your bass track (you can use stock plugins like Ableton’s Saturator or Logic’s Overdrive). Add just a little bit of ‘Drive’ to generate those precious mid-range harmonics. This won’t change the sound much on your studio monitors, but it will make the bass magically appear on laptops, earbuds, and phones.

You might have been too aggressive with your EQ cuts (‘subtractive EQ’). Remember, we only cut 2-4dB from the bass to make room for the kick. If you scoop out too much, you’ll lose the body of the sound. Also, check that you didn’t accidentally cut the fundamental frequency of the sound you’re trying to preserve. The goal is a surgical notch, not a massive crater in your frequency spectrum. Always A/B test your EQ by toggling the plugin on and off to ensure you’re actually improving the sound.
Producer’s Note (Mono Compatibility): A final pro-level check. Most club PAs and many playback systems sum the low-end to mono. Put a ‘Utility’ or ‘Gain’ plugin on your master track and switch it to Mono. Does your kick or bass suddenly get much quieter or phasey? If so, you may have some stereo information in your low-end that is causing phase cancellation. Use your utility plugin to make everything below ~120Hz on your bass and kick tracks mono to ensure a solid, stable foundation for your mix. A powerful, centered mono low-end is the bedrock of a professional track.

Time for some critical listening. Open your favorite streaming service and listen to “bad guy” by Billie Eilish. Use good headphones. For the first minute, focus only on the relationship between the clean, simple kick and that massive, distorted 808-style bass. Notice how, despite the bass being so dominant and wide, the kick’s transient cuts through perfectly every single time. It feels like the kick is punching a momentary hole in the bass. That is the sound of expert-level sidechain compression and EQ. That’s the clarity and power we’re chasing.

- Mon/Tues: Open an old project where the low-end felt muddy. Do not start from scratch. Apply the exact steps from the Workbench: Gain Stage, EQ the Kick, carve a pocket in the Bass, and apply gentle Sidechain Compression. Compare the before and after.
