- The Tamer (De-Esser): After compression, harsh sibilant sounds (‘s’, ‘sh’, ‘t’) can become really pronounced and painful. A De-Esser is just a frequency-specific compressor. Production Pitfalls (and Pro Fixes)

You’ve likely over-compressed. The goal is to control, not crush. Try these fixes:
1. Reduce the Ratio to something gentler, like 2.5:1.
2. Slow down the Attack time. A slower attack (15-20ms) will let more of the initial ‘punch’ of the syllable through before the compression kicks in, preserving more natural dynamics.
3. Simply reduce the Threshold so you’re only getting 2-4dB of gain reduction, not 10dB.

This is a frequency masking issue. Your vocal is competing for the same sonic space as other instruments (often synths, guitars, or pianos). The fix is to apply EQ to the *other* instruments.
