The 4-Step ‘De-Echo’ Workflow (in Audacity)
Alright, you’ve recorded in your best possible space. There’s probably still a little bit of room sound left. Now, we’ll use the free and powerful software Audacity to sculpt your audio to perfection. Apply these effects in order. Order matters!

Step 1 (The Cleanse): High-Pass Filter
First, we remove useless low-end rumble that muddies your voice. Select your entire track, then go to `Effect > Filter Curve EQ…`. Click the `Manage` button, go to `Factory Presets`, and select `High-pass filter`. Set the `Frequency (Hz)` to 80 and the `Rolloff` to `24 dB per octave`. This instantly removes traffic noise, air conditioner hum, and mic stand vibrations without affecting your vocal warmth.

Step 2 (The Surgery): Subtractive EQ
This is where we remove the ‘boxiness’. In that same `Filter Curve EQ` window, you will perform a simple but powerful technique called the ‘sweep and destroy’ method. - `Threshold:` A good starting point is -16dB. This means any audio louder than -16dB will be turned down.
- `Noise Floor:` Keep this around -40dB.
- `Ratio:` Set this to 3:1. This is a gentle, natural-sounding ratio for voice.
- `Attack Time:` ~0.1 seconds. `Release Time:` ~1.0 seconds. These are good general-purpose settings for vocals.
- CRUCIAL: Make sure the box for `Make-up gain for 0dB after compressing` is checked. This automatically boosts the entire track back to a healthy level.

Engineer’s Note (EQ before Compression): Why do we cut bad frequencies before we compress? Think of it like making a salad. For 99% of home creators, the answer is a resounding NO. Commercial acoustic foam is designed to treat very specific frequency problems and is often overkill. Your closet filled with clothes or a well-constructed blanket fort provides more than enough broadband absorption to tame the reflections that plague home recordings. Spend your money on a better microphone or a good pair of headphones long before you ever consider buying foam.
“Which USB microphone should I buy to reduce echo?”
This is a common misconception. A different microphone won’t magically solve an echo problem. A bad room will make a $1000 microphone sound bad. Your priority should always be treating your space first. That said, if you’re starting out, a good ‘cardioid’ condenser microphone is what you want.
